WHY DO WE HAVE A TOOTH SENSITIVITY?? HOW TO GET RID FROM TOOTH SENSITIVITY

WHAT IS TOOTH SENSITIVITY?

Tooth sensitivity is nothing but acute, sharp, intense pain from internal part of tooth when it is exposed to external stimuli.
This stimuli could be from food such as hot, cold,  acidic and sweet. It can also get triggered by touch too.

This is due to exposure of a layer called dentin when the outer hard enamel layer wears off.
To understand this concept you have to know about the tooth anatomy.

Tooth consist of enamel, dentin, pulp and cementum.
Enamel is the outer hard structure composed of calcium phosphate minerals.
Dentin is the second/middle layer of  contains of dentinal tubules and mineral. Dentine is much softer than enamel, and have nerve fibres.
The inner most core is the pulp consists of living tissues (Have blood and nerve supply). The cementum is the layer covering the root portion of the tooth.

As dentine contains nerve fibres at one end of tubules, when it is exposed to external stimuli ,we feel severe tooth sensitivity.

There are many theories regarding tooth sensitivity ,out of which the most accepted theory is the Hydrodynamic theory ,which explains the fluid movement inside the dentinal tubules.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF TOOTH SENSITIVITY ?

- It is caused due to the wearing away of enamel structure and exposure of dentine. It can be of various reasons.

 > Wrong brushing technique, brushing vigorously leading to wearing away of enamel structure.
> Consumption of acidic beverages (Soft drinks)
> Attrition - enamel wearing from incisal or Occlusal surface due to friction from opposite teeth while grinding
>Erosion - loss of enamel caused due acidic food and drink or due to acid coming from stomach
>Abrasion - loss of enamel mainly in the cervical region due to vigorous brushing
>Abfraction - chipping of enamel structure from the gumline region due to pressure on tooth or gums.
>Reccesion of gums due to aging, periodontal infections, or due to any trauma due to occlusion

> Stress ,causing Bruxism ( grinding of tooth ).

HOW TO  MANAGE TOOTH SENSITIVITY ??

- Using desensitizing toothpaste such as Sensodyne.

How desensitizing toothpaste pastes works?

- Desensitizing toothpaste paste contains mainly  Stannous fluoride and Potassium nitrate .

Potassium nitrate prevents nerves in teeth from sending pain signals
- Stannous fluoride works like a shield protect tooth and preventing stimuli  from interacting  with nerves

- If still the sensitivity remains  the dentist will do direct restoration on the exposed surface, or sometimes may place a protective crown and seal it.

Life is difficult with sensitive teeth, don't let them spoil your festive fun. A dental check-up is an essential part of preventive care.
