CAVITY RESTORATIONS TIPS FOR BEGINNER DENTIST AND DENTAL STUDENTS IN THIER CLINICAL PRACTICE.

WHAT IS THE SUITABLE WAY TO PROTECT THE PULP BEFORE ANY PERMANENT RESTORATION IN CASE OF DEEP CAVITIES?

Normally After the removal of caries and cavity preparation, liners and bases are applied to the walls of the prepared cavity to protect it from chemical, mechanical and thermal affects before any permanent restorations like silver amalgam, gold or composite.

There will be pros and cons of the materials used under restorations of the cavity.
If the prepared cavity is limited to 1mm to 2mm, there is no requirement of liners or base, you can directly carry-on with a permanent restoration.
But if the prepared cavity is more the 2mm is depth, it's better to give a thin layer of dycal and covered with a glass ionomer cement, before restoring with any permanent restoration like composite.
In cases of silver amalgam restorations two layers of varnish can be applied.

~ PROPERTIES OF DYCAL
 
Dycal is a rigid setting of calicum hydroxide Ca(OH)2. It can stimulate the process of secondary dentine formation It's acid resistant.



~ PROPERTIES OF GLASS IONOMER CEMENT (GIC)

Glass ionomer cement has good bonding strength with tooth, has property of fluoride release so less chances of caries activities, very good Coefficency of linear expansion, biocompactable and bioactive material.

~ PROPERTIES OF VARNISH IN AMALGAM RESTORATIONS

It provides a protective barrier, prevents fluid penetration into dentine causing irritation, and helps in reducing post operative Sensivity in dentin.
