DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOOTH DISCOLOURATIONS AND ITS CAUSES

Tooth discoloration is one of the most common problem among many of the individuals where the tooth loses its natural colour and shade due to various  external and internal factors.


These mostly happens to people who does not take proper care of their teeth and maintain proper oral hygiene.
This can occur in people of any age groups

These are mainly classified into :-

~ Extrinsic 
~ Intrinsic
~ Age-related factors.

Extrinsic factors occurs on the outer surface of the teeth, mainly due to the stains or residues from various types of beverages or food substances and use of tobacco products.

Intrinsic stains occurs inside the tooth due to the penetration of the stains into the outer layers of the tooth. Sometimes it can also occur due to the defect in the internal tissues or due to the excessive fluoride Intake.

Age-related discoloration occurs as due to the wearing away of  the outer enamel layer and the exposure of inner dentine which shows yellowish colour.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES :

~ Maintaining proper oral hygiene.

~ Proper brushing and flossing of your teeth.

~ Keeping  a regular check on your teeth


TREATMENTS :

~ Certain types of superficial stains can be removed by oral prophylaxis/scaling

~ In-office & In-Home bleaching procedures

~ Enamel microabrasion

~ Dental bonding procedure

~ Dental veneering


VARIOUS FORMS OF  TOOTH DISCOLORATIONS AND IT'S CAUSES 

WHITE 

Its is caused by a condition known as Fluorosis which happens when too much of fluoride is intaked especially in young age.


YELLOW

When the outer enamel layer wears off, its starts showing inner dentine which is slightly yellowish in color.

BROWN 

This mainly happens due to the increased consumption of coffee, tea ,coke and poor brushing of teeth, smoking Cigerates.

BLACK 

This happens when the tooth get decayed and pulp tissue gets necrotised.
Also occur due to chewing of different kind of substance like betal nuts, areca nuts etc.
Sometimes black stains can occurs due to the silver amalgm restoration too.
