PIONEER'S OF DENTISTRY

1) FARTHER OF MODERN DENTISTRY 

Pierre fauchard is also known as the father of modern dentistry. He was a French physician and also the author of the book 'Chirurgien dentistry' the first book explaining the complete scientific aspect of dentistry.

He is the first person to explain about various oral diseases including Gum diseases. He introduced the idea of replacement of missing tooth Restoration of decayed tooth and use of braces for the correction of malaligned tooth.

He mentioned about various new instruments for the proper surgical extraction of tooth.

He suggested the use of clove oil and cinnamon for pulpal inflammation and tooth pain

2) FATHER OF OPERATIVE DENTISTRY

G.V black is known as the father of operative dentistry . He was an American dentist and researcher. He described the methods of Ideal cavity preparations for restoration of decayed tooth(Principals of cavity preparations).

He had done many researchers in the pathology of dental caries and about the cause of dental fluorosis.

GV black have published his theories and concepts of operative dentistry and classified it according to different types and reasons of dental caries.

He too had done many experiments and researches for an ideal mix of amalgam in cavity restoration.

3) FATHER OF ORTHODONTICS

Edward angle is known as the father of orthodontics and an American dentist. He was a General dental practitioner until he made a separate specialisation in the orthodontic field.

Edward had done many researches and started practicing on it. Later he started to teach it as a separate post graduate specialisation after general dentistry.

He has published books explaining the treatment modalities techniques and different appliance used for the correction of various abnormalities in the position of teeth and Jaws.

He has termed the name malocclusion which means abnormalities in the position of teeth/jaws and the occluding surface.

 

4) FATHER OF INDIAN DENTISTRY

Rafiuddin ahmed is know as the father of indian dentistry. He was the founder of the 1st dental college in india ' R AHMED DENTAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL' which is later known as Calcutta dental college. 

Rafiuddin was also interested politics as he was elected as the councillor of Calcutta munciple coperation and later became minister in bengal cabinet and served the nation.

He played a major role in Bengal dentist act in 1939.

Later he established the bengal dental associatation which was then changed to the IDA( Indian dental associatation).

He is the 1st dentist to recieve the Padma bushan award by the govt. Of india.

 

5) FATHER OF PERIODONTICS

John M Riggs is known as the father of periodontics. He was an American dentist. Periodontal disease was also named as riggs disease during that period. John was more focused and limited in his practise in periodontal aspects, so he was considered as the first specialist in the periodontal branch.

He started different periodontal Surgeries for gum recession during that period of time. He claimed the importance for oral hygeine and prevention of oral disease. He studied and practised various treatment modalities in improving the oral health and hygiene.

6) FATHER OF PAEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

Robert bunon is known as the father of pediatric dentistry. He was a French physician and dentist. He was more focused in oral disease and treatment plan of children and pregnant patients.

He also had many publications and ideologies related to pedodontic Speciality.

Robert bunon also conducted many studies to understand the influence of mother in development of foetus and the pattern of tooth eruption. He has formulated a tooth paste and stated its benefits of prevention of inflammation and swelling of the gums, bad breath, and ulcers forming in mouth.

7) FATHER OF ORAL SURGERY 

James Edmund garretson is known as the father of oral surgery. He was an American physician who worked as a professor and published the 1st book which mainly related to oral surgery and disease.

He was the physician who made a separate branch of oral surgery from general dental practise and made his own inventions and ideology based on the treatment procedure and management on oral surgery.
