CAN POOR ORAL HYGIENE CAUSE HEART DISEASE ?

Over the past 10 years evidences are found to suggest that the extent and severity of periodontal diseases or simply gum diseases are associated with the increase of coronary heart disease.

Recently there has been several studies which have investigated the extent of these periodontal disease put patient at greater risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases.

This disease is where plaque, known as atheromatous plaque, which is made up of fat, cholesterol and other substance found in blood which, Hardens your arteries over time, limiting the flow of oxygen rich blood to organs and other parts of our body.

Study revealing data from one hundred thousand cases found that the prevalence and incidence of coronary heart disease are significantly increased in patients with periodontal disease.

Some finding states that the bacteria in periodontal disease, stimulate the immune system and produce inflammation in the arteries, this means that region of blood vessels might be already developing plaque due to cholesterol that are stimulated to form a blockage.

Other studies conclude that a periodontal disease bacteria get into the bloodstream become incorporated into atheromatous plaque and exaggerate inflammation.

A lot of research work is revealing that how important is to keep your mouth healthy through regular brushing, flossing and keeping bacteria in check.

Another study has shown that participants who brush their teeth less often 70 percentage increased risk of cardiovascular disease events.

It can be hypothesized that neglecting a dental hygiene and allowing bacteria to build up could increase the chance of these bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

Inflammation of the gums is caused by different varieties of bacteria formed inside the mouth due to lack of oral hygiene.

The gums have blood vessels and have a highly rich  blood supply, any inflammation or infections of these gums makes an easy access to bacterias to enter into the bloodstream.

When these bacteria through blood  reaches the arteries, it can cause inflammation leading to narrowing and swelling of vessels resulting in atherosclerosis, forming of plaque inside the arteries which can lead to heart disease.

Sometimes the bacterias in the bloodstream can also accumulate inside the heart.

Bacterias which gets accumulated in the valves of the heart can cause an inflammatory condition known as bacterial endocarditis which also leads to heart attacks.

We can take neccessary precautions and preventive measures to avoid this kind of situations by maintaining a good oral hygiene practices like :

~ Brushing teeth twice daily

~ Flossing regularly

~ Visiting dentist every six months
