WHY DO WE HAVE WHITE SPOTS ON TEETH ? HOW TO GET RID OF IT?

White spots on teeth can look quite unappealing. While they don't indicate bad health condition, but can affect a person's self confidence while interacting with others.

This is nothing but decalcification or hypocalcification of enamel, due to the  loss of mineral content of the outer layer of tooth called enamel.

These white spots are weakend enamel, which if not treated at the right time, may cause certain complications in the overall aesthetic  appearance of the teeth.

HOW IT HAPPENS?

There are different reasons for this condition.
~ Fluorosis
~ Bacterial over growth
~ Enamel hypoplasia
~ Due to orthodontic braces (Post orthodontic treatment)
~ Nutritional deficiency
~ Medications
~ Smoking while pregnancy

FLUOROSIS

Fluoride in proper amount is good for teeth. It is an anti caries agent, but anything more is always bad. Like that over fluoride intake also leads to a condition like fluorosis, causing white  spot on the tooth surface, especially in childhood when the teeth are growing.

ENAMEL HYPOPLASIA

Hypoplasia occurs during the stage of tooth development, due to defect in enamel matrix formations. It may be due to genetic disorder or nutritional deficiency. This affects the  permanent dentition causing white patches on tooth surface.

ORTHODONTIC BRACES

Having anything glued to your teeth tends to build debris in the area and it makes more difficult to clean your teeth. The acids produced by the bacterias slightly dissolve the surface enamel layer and causes chalky white spots due to dimineralisation. People with fixed orthodontics have frequently encountered with white spots on the teeth surface.

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY

A diet short of calcium deprives your body what it needs to build strong, healthy enamel. But, out enough of minerals, your teeth pay the price by white spots. A balanced diet with minerals will help to keep your enamel strong and spot free.

MEDICATIONS

Some medications are known to cause white spots on teeth. Certain antibiotics and antihistamines has these side effects, especially for pregnant women and nursing women, should inform the doctor before taking those medicines.

SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY

Pregnant women, those who smokes can lead to the damage to the tooth of their unborn baby. These is because smoking tobacco during pregnancy promote the process of enamel hypoplasia. Avoiding tobacco can save your child from enamel deficiency.

Your dentist have various treatment methods to over come these spots.

~ Teeth whitening /bleaching
~ Enamel microabrasion
~ Veneers
~ Natural remedies

TEETH WHITENING /BLEACHING

This procedure is done to lighten the color of teeth without any removal of enamel structure or itching. This invloves applying of bleaching solution on the tooth's surface. After an appropriate exposure time the bleaching solution is removed and teeth is washed with water. Generally this has two options, one is In-office bleaching and at-home bleaching, both have its advantages and disadvantages.

ENAMEL MICROABRASION

This is a dental procedure which improves the aesthetic of the teeth. It is mainly done to remove the discolorations and white spots formed on the surface of teeth. It involves use of acids and abrasive for cleaning and polishing.

DENTAL VENEERS

This is a procedure in which a tooth colored material is fixed on the facial aspects of the tooth, which improves the aesthetic of a smile and protect the tooth surface from damage.

NATURAL HOME REMEDIES

The following are few home remedies by which we can get rid of these conditions.

1) Using fluoride free water.

2) Brushing with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide(very less amount)with baking soda.

3) Practising oil pulling as coconut oil contains Laurice acid.

4) Rubbing with lemon juice and salt on the tooth surface, but do not try this for long term as lemon contains citric acid which can lead to the wearing of the enamel layer.

Remineralisation process is too slow as it takes several years to get naturally repaired, So to get rid of this very soon, visit the nearby dentist and do the needful treatment for better aesthetics smile.
